Introduction

The Scottish Association of Meat Wholesalers (SAMW) represents the majority interests of the slaughtering, wholesaling and processing sectors of the Scottish meat industry in which there is an increasing trend to further processing and added value activities.

Membership

Association members account for more than 90% of the Scottish meat trade, commanding a combined annual turnover in excess of £600m and employing over 3000 people. Member businesses play a major role in the Scottish economy.

Objectives

SAMW's key objective is to represent meat industry views and the interests of its members to Government in Edinburgh, London and Brussels, securing an effective voice for members on all major issues. Regular meetings are held with Ministers and Officials in the Scottish Executive, with central government and other national agencies in conjunction with other UK trade organisations, and in Brussels, both directly and as members of UECBV.

Representation

SAMW is represented on various SGRD, DEFRA, FSA, MHS and RPA stakeholder groups, the Meat Industry Liaison Group, the HSE Joint Meat Group, Improve (SSC) and the UK Meat Training Council.

Communication

SAMW issues regular newsletters and other appropriate information to all members to keep them fully briefed on current issues and developments.

Executive

A President and two Vice-Presidents are elected annually, heading a Board of Directors which includes an additional twelve members. Board representatives are drawn from businesses large and small throughout Scotland, meeting regularly to debate current issues and make policy decisions. Day to day affairs are the responsibility of the Executive Manager.
